The second book I've chosen to read this semester is Hav by Jan Morris. Although I haven't started reading it yet, I'm very excited for it to get delivered so I can! I became very interested in reading it after the article described it as "a novel in the guise of a travelogue". Knowing virtually nothing about this "fictitious Mediterranean city-state", I'm excited to see where this novel takes me. I'm expecting that it will be very well written considering Jan Morris is primarily a travel writer by profession.
From the blurb that the article included on it, I think it will prove to be a very complex, thought-provoking novel. The themes and topics discussed -- "the conflict between tradition and modern life, Cold War tensions, indigenous populations facing extinction, how society changes after tumultuous upheaval, and the rise of religious fundamentalism and neoliberal economics (wow that was a lot of words!) -- are all so fascinating and I don't think I've ever read a book that explores any one of them, let alone all of them. I think the book's being delivered tomorrow so I'm very excited to get started and I'm sure I'll have quite a bit to say in my next post!
